Hunting down roaring fires

Hunting down roaring fires

A good crowd met at the Chapel this Saturday morning for chat with the less able bodied Mr SE and Mr ET who between them currently have a good pair of arms. Then 6 headed out through the lanes to Cary to pick up Mr JG and Mr AO at Dimmer Tip - well their choice of a loitering point…. On via a circuitous route through Foddington, Babcary and Kingsdon before heading down on to the levels around Yeovilton and finally the climb up to The Trough, just north of Yeovil. Mr SB had headed down solo and met us there. Placed next to the fire, we tucked into their menu of food and drink, but were a little disappointed when the bill had to be paid en masse. Dr L shot of home, leaving the lads to find a more direct route back up to Bruton.

Sunday brought brighter skies, colder weather and stronger (NE) winds. 4 headed up Druly after Dr L decided against the longer 3 Daggers route to Westbury. It was a hard slog with the cold and the wind. Mr PT and Mr LT turned off to Shearwater, whilst Dr L and Mr CP pressed onto Warminster, then hanging L back towards Longleat, went straight through the estate (and at one point Dr L could have sworn Mr CP was leading them straight into the Safari Park!) and out onto the main roads over to Frome and Nunney Catch. Fuel stop needed, we turned into Palette and Pasture, the home of Somerset Gelato, to find a fire, big mugs of hot coffee and some still warm sausage rolls. Sun shone, the roads through Upton Noble and Witham Friary were dry, and there may have just been a touch of tail wind to blow us back into Bruton. Good elevation for the distance travelled. And another successful outing for Mr CPs new bike which was taken swiftly home for a damn good clean.
