In September 2022 Peter Tubb’s (Bruton Cycle Club Member) nephew, Marcus Stewart, an ex-Premiership Striker, was sadly diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. Following this devastating news Peter’s son, George, suggested that he should organise a cycle event to raise much needed research funds and awareness of the disease, especially in Football.

So the idea was sprung to cycle to each of the 7 football clubs Marcus used to play for, a 950km cycle with over 8,500 meters of climbing, all within 7 days. Thus the tag line was born, cycling to “7 Clubs in 7 Days”. It was decided to to do the event over two rides, mainly for logistical reasons and to align with the football fixtures, as they wanted to arrive at the last club of each leg during half-time at one of the home matches. This was to maximise the awareness campaign.

The first leg of the ride started in Sunderland on 4th October 2023 visiting Huddersfield Town along the way and ending the four day ride at Ipswich Town’s ground. Here the 7 riders received a fantastic welcome along with the best seats in the house for the top of the table clash between Ipswich & Preston. The riders then moved onto the West Country leg where they were joined buy more riders taking on the challenge of cycling from Bristol City, to Exeter, on to Yeovil then finishing at Bristol Rovers Ground, where Marcus started his fabulous football career.

Peter has mentioned many times that this charity ride would not have happened without the support of Bruton Cycle Club. From the riders that rode with him, to the many donations and logistical support provided by the members, it was truly a great team effort. As a result they raised over £20,000 towards Marcus and his wife Louise’s #teamstewart254 charity campaign, with all the funds going to the “Darby Rimmer MND Charity Foundation”.
