Bacon in Warminster, Cake in Forde
Saturday we awoke to glorious skies and fresh temperatures as the BCC faithful converged on ‘At the Chapel’ (with MrSI carrying out a solo trip to ‘On the Brook’ first!) for a quick brew whilst considering the mornings adventure.
The amassed seven had already decided the destination … although the route was debated and the possibility of venturing off the regular routes out of Bruton were considered.
In the event, a less worn journey through Witham Friary and the back roads into Longleat were the chosen destination (MrSB patiently waiting at the top of Druly for the peloton which never arrived …. All met-up later in Warminster so no harm there!)
The delights of the Longleat Estate and Longcombe Drive were enjoyed by all (in varying degrees) and the group pedalled away (with MrAO peeling off as he was on a time limit) to Warminster to the delights of the ‘Le Café Journal’ where a very patient and accommodating waitress was subjected to the culinary foibles of MrJG and MrCT who persisted in ordering ‘variations-on-a-theme’ of bacon and eggs.
After a hearty replenishment the group departed and wound their merry way back to Bruton where the hardened trio of MrJG MrRM and MrCT continued on to make a longer ride thus capitalising on the weather, whilst the remaining three MrAF, MrKL and MrSI, returned to our various homes to contemplate how many ways there actually are to serve bacon and scrambled egg on toast?
Sunday saw a more select gathering on the bridge with MrDC, MrAF, MrTW and MsJP who made up the BCC posse for the Sunday jaunt. No-one quite caught the mumblings of MrTW who mentioned (under his breath) a route of … 60 or 70ish miles … so we departed in glorious ignorance in the fresh morning.
A route out through Cary, Somerton and beyond onto Dowlish Wake was enjoyed – although the rise towards Cricket St Thomas was an incline to remember for future avoidance!
A delightful café stop at Forde Abbey involved copious cake (as we were too early for bacon! …. When is it ever too early for bacon!!?) and coffee and the onward journey into Drimpton, Mosterton and Cheddington enabled all to gaze in wonder at the views on a delightfully fresh day.
The ride became more favourable as we began to glimpse signposts to recognisable hamlets and localities and the route soon led towards Sherborne and the roads more travelled by BCC regulars.
Corton Denham saw MrTW leave the group, followed by MrDC who peeled off shortly afterwards leaving MrAF and MsJP to return through Yarlington and back to Bruton to complete the 73miles (… yes 73 MrTW!) and bask in the sense of well-being after another enjoyable ride.
