Mr Blue Sky
Winter’s Definitely Arrived; the sub zero temperatures overnight resulted in a later start although chapeau to Dr L for cycling in the cold and mist to arrive at the normal hour to meet a new recruit, Mr GH. Unfortunately Mr GH had the same thoughts as the rest of us - icy roads are not for cycling on - and delayed his departure resulting in Dr L enjoying a solo coffee! As the group gradually convened at the Chapel the departure time slowly moved backwards giving the sun a chance to emerge and burn off the mist. On leaving Bruton there were still questions about the route but after picking up the two Grahams at the bottom of Druley it was agreed there would be a split at Mere for anyone in need of an earlier return. The ride to Maiden Bradley was uneventful although the decision to turn right down the back road to Kingston Deverill was immediately questioned after encountering several patches of ice. There were spectacular views at the top of Mere Down where the sun was out but this only emphasised the cloud and mist lingering in the lowlands and the temperature noticeably dropped a few degrees as we descended into Mere and onto Motcombe and Shaftesbury. Had Mr PT and Mr JM made the correct decision by taking the short route home? Not at all! The remaining group, fortified by refuelling at The Ugly Ducking, made a quick return via Gillingham, Buckhorn Weston and a smooth chain gang performance to Wincanton. We hope Mr GH enjoyed the ride and look forward to seeing him return in more pleasant conditions.Good banter, challenging weather and even more advice for Mr KL to contemplate in choosing his new steed for the summer!
Sunday dawned crisp and bright as Mr T, Mr DC and Mr W met on Church Bridge and the mercury struggled to get above 0. The opening comment of “I can’t feel my fingers” was fortunately only a temporary condition and the day and riders soon warmed up. The route was slightly changed to take in more main roads and avoid the icy back roads which made for a slightly busier ride but much safer. A quick ride down to Dorchester, a great coffee at Finca and then a run back along the Piddle Valley made up the 72 miles of the ride but doesn’t express the beauty of the day for riding. The blue sky and bright sun made for an excellent time out which was enjoyed (?) by all. Long may the rain stay away.
